 Australia Tours: Outback explorer

Australia Tours

 Days 1-6 Adelaide

Adelaide, city of festivals and cricket lovers, is a great place to start an Outback adventure. But first get to know this leafy state capital. A visit to the Adelaide Oval is a must – as is a guided tour of the Central Market. Do some wine tasting in the Adelaide Hills  and pop over to Kangaroo Island, famous for its wildlife, produce and beaches. Last time I went to Kangaroo Island I saw a southern right whale from the ferry.

Days 7-9 Darwin

Board the Ghan for your epic rail journey to Darwin. Named after the Afghan cameleers who did so much to open up inland Australia, this is one of the world’s most famous trains. The three-day journey is equally epic, but you can sit back and relax in air-conditioned comfort, and meet your fellow travellers in the bar. Take advantage of the off-train touring options in Alice Springs and Katherine, including Nitmiluk Gorge.

Days 10-14 Darwin & Kakadu

Darwin. Your train journey is over but your Top End adventure is just beginning. Once little more than a frontier settlement, Darwin is now a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a distinctly Asian feel. It’s also a great base for exploring Kakadu, a vast national park containing an astonishing range of flora and fauna. Visit the gorges on the nearby Katherine River, and the contemporary Aboriginal communities in the Tiwi Islands, 80km north of Darwin.
