Borneo really offers an exciting family adventure with its river rafting and turtles on Selingan Island, the caves of Gomantong and the Kinbatangan River where you can join a cruise in search of an impressive array of wildlife including pygmy elephants, monitor lizards, wild orangutans and most famously, the proboscis monkey with their peculiar long-noses.  But without a doubt, what the children really want to see are the orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.  This is one of the few remaining places on Earth that this endangered species are protected and you can learn about their protection and rescue.  For marine wildlife, the island of Lankayan has some of the best dive sites for beginners (children as young as eight can try diving with PADI’s excellent Bubblemaker course at Lankayan) but there are also fantastic snorkelling opportunities. Nearby Selingan Island is also a favourite nesting place for giant turtles that travel hundreds of miles to lay their eggs on the same beach on which they hatched years before.

The Shangri-La hotels in Sabah offer superb family facilities. The Tanjung Aru is right by the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park and conveniently only 15 minutes away from the airport. . Alternatively, the Rasa Ria is about 45 minutes away from the airport and has a beautiful private beach and its own orangutan sanctuary.

When we think you should go

Borneo is one of Southeast Asia’s few summer destinations as the best time to travel is between March and October.  The wet season is traditionally from November to February.
