What we think you will like!

If ever there was a place for adventure South Africa is it!   There is obviously fashionable and cosmopolitan Cape Town with Table Mountain, the Southern right whales basking off the coast of Hermanus or the penguins of Robbins Bay but nothing can prepare you for coming face to face with Africa’s big 5 in the family friendly, malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve on the Northwest provence or the Shamwari Game Reserve situated in the Eastern Cape, with its numerous international awards for conservation.

A favourite resort with our families.

Jaci’s Safari Lodge, Madikwi Jaci’s Safari Lodge in the Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve, just four hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria  provides the opportunity for the perfect family safari as well as introducing children to the wonders and enjoyment of the African bush. Children of all ages are welcome at Jaci's and are especially catered for.  Jungle Drives are provided for children 4yrs and younger and go out once a day, between the morning and evening game drives. On the "jungle drive" things of interest to children are pointed out, e.g. toothbrush plants, beetles, etc. The information on the drive is aimed at the age/s of the children on the drive. The "jungle drive" is included in the children's special rate. The family safari vehicles are only available at Jaci’s Safari Lodge – these allow families to be together on a vehicle for the morning and evening game drives alternatively child minding is provided free of charge if you want to enjoy an adult only game drive. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. This is the ideal family safari travel experience, situated on the fynbos and forest clad hills that overlook the whale-watching haven of Walker Bay.  At Grootbos there is a children’s programme and choices include excursions to the beach and rock pools, abseiling, trips through the reserve and riding lessons. These activities along with babysitting services and children’s menus make Grootbos an excellent family holiday choice.  There is also plenty for the grownups to do including trips out in a custom built whale-watching boat, which will take you on a marine big five adventure. See Southern Right Whales only meters from the boat; travel to the island refuge of huge sea bird colonies and nesting grounds of the rare African Penguin. Admire the underwater antics of a sixty thousand strong Cape Fur Seal colony. Watch dolphins play in the wake of your boat and be amazed by the awesome spectacle of a great white shark breaking the surface. After all this activity you will thoroughly enjoy the excellent food and five star hospitality offered at Grootbos. Longlee Manor, Shanwari Game Resort For a family first experience of game viewing, Shamwari Game Reserve is an excellent choice.  This malaria free, private game reserve situated in the Eastern Cape, has received numerous international awards for conservation.  A typical day at Shamwari is an early wake up call with tea, an animal drive with a very knowledgeable guide and breakfast at a river camp.  There is then time for relaxing by the pool, a spot of lunch, and a siesta before the evening game drive. After, hopefully, seeing a pride of lions or a pack of wild dogs the drive ends watching the sun go down with a cool drink.  It is then back to your room for a quick shower before exchanging animal stories over dinner. Child-friendly accommodation is available at Longlee Manor.  The suites are elegant and very comfortable with views over the sweeping plains leading down to the river.

When we think you should go

South Africa is a fabulous all year-round destination so when you visit depends on what you would like to do. The best time for game watching  in the northern game reserves is from April to October.  The Mediterranean climate along the Garden Route means this region is best visited between August and April. The southern right whales can be seen from about mid June to the end of October, and the humpback whales from August to December.
